The Savior Impala Story:

The Impala...

What can I say about an iconic legend of 60 years?

Being born in the Motor City "Detroit", I've seen them from sleek stock cruisers all the way to modified race cars. When I was a young child, one of my neighbors had a mid-60's Impala four door model that took us kids to the local drive-in movie theater. That was my first memory of being in one of Motown's finest machines of solid steel of its era. The other kids did not think much of it then, but I told myself that "One day I will have a car like this." I always enjoyed seeing cars of the 60-70's, cruising down Gratiot Avenue, or at the Woodward Dream Cruise but many years have passed since that day at the drive-in theater.

I never forgot about the dream.

It just became a moment of time that was dormant.

Then one day back in 2015, I was home visiting family that was not doing well health wise. I decided to get some fresh air while my old car club in Michigan, was at the "Crusin' Hines" Hines Drive car cruise. I sat on the side of the road outside my daily driver, and sure enough a black beauty two door 1967 Impala goes by me in what felt like slow motion. That was the moment that memory as a child, flickered and popped like a firecracker. I had to take a second look to make sure the Winchester brothers were not driving it. I knew it was time for a new chapter in my life, and a new project.

I first saw the show "Supernatural" about half-way through season four. When I saw the 1967 Impala in the show, I really thought this was unique, even with the classic rock music. I never really got into it until around season seven, but I was then instantly hooked. By that time all the other shows I watched were being retired, and I had seen a lot of episodes of previous season reruns. I had a lot of catching up to do, to really understand just how important the Impala was to the show. After that day at the Hines drive car cruise, my journey of searching for the Impala began. Between then, and 2017 many were found, but none of them seemed to work out for many different reasons. Finally, after searching forums, Craigslist, Facebook, and eBay, I finally found one that I really felt "real" to me.

Several emails and long phone calls followed and the final hours of the sale on auction came. I had a budget to stay within, and I hoped I would be the one to get it. In the last five minutes of the sale, I watched the price jump up several thousands of dollars. I put my bid in, and felt my throat hit my stomach. The price jumped again well above my budget. At this point, I was dumbfounded that I finally found "her", but she had seemed to slip through my grasp. I messaged the seller since at this point, we knew each other on first name basis. I told him that if the buyer for any reason backed out to please call me. I would do whatever I could to get her. Two days went by. I heard nothing and told myself, "I think it's time to take a break since nothing seems to be going according to plan." I prayed about it and asked for a sign on what to do. I went to sleep that night having no idea what the next day would bring. Morning came and I went about my normal routine and drove to work. Later that day, boy did I get a surprise. I received a call from the seller explaining that indeed the buyer has backed out even after putting down a deposit! That if I was still interested, I was next in line to get her. I thought to myself " If this isn't a sign, then what is?"

After working out all the details, I had to investigate travel since the car was located several states away. Luckily the shop she was at was within 15 minutes of a North Carolina airport. The seller even was nice enough to pick me and a friend up from the airport to get my soon to be classic ride. After two years, in 2017, my search was finally complete. The night before my flight, I barely slept, and I felt like a little kid all over again at the drive-in. The day came, I landed in North Carolina, and next thing I know she is right there in front of me. I was in awe in her presence and I couldn't even speak. I just stood there staring at her. Next thing I know, all the paperwork was done, I had a set of keys in my hand, and was the owner of a 1967 Chevy Impala Four Door that runs and drives! That cold night, real journey back to Florida began. For a trip that should have taken roughly 12 hours, it ended up taking 20 hours. Every stop at a gas station, rest area, restaurant, you name it, someone came up to me sharing their own stories of growing up with the era, or their appreciation for her. I knew I made no mistake with this. My "sign" had indeed been real, and I was not dreaming. Now being a die hard "Supernatural" fan, I could do my own tribute car in my own way.

She finally made her debut at the "Supernatural Orlando Convention" in January 2018. I met a fellow "Metallicar" owner and she told me that I had to name her and that she named her car "Chuck". After seeing that day how many people came up to the car asking to take photos, and their reactions afterwards, I knew what I needed to do. But naming the car became a very difficult task to tackle. I went over countless character names, and slangs of the show. I felt there were many good choices but the ones I really liked had already been taken. For another few days I tried my best, but nothing felt right. Then finally came to the realization that I didn't need a character name and I had been going in the wrong direction. After talking to so many nice people at the convention, and listening to the stories at the panels, it all became clear to me. I had listened to a fan's story about the show was saving them and helping their struggles in real life. I related to this deeply and thus the "Savior" was born. Having now been at many comic & collectible conventions, I've met fellow fans, saw their smiles, heard their stories, and have watched them looking at that Impala with their own eyes and a smile that makes their weekend.

I know "The Savior Impala" was a perfect name for her because that's exactly what she is.

"The Savior, will always continue to live on with... Saving People, Hunting Things - you know, The Family Business!."
